artwork guide
Formats
Artwork may be supplied to us in a variety of formats including PDF, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, QuarkXpress, Adobe Photoshop. Our preferred formats would be either QuarkXpress (collected for output with all fonts & images included) or PDF with fonts embedded, especially if created on a PC.
Images/imported graphics
All images and graphics should be supplied as CMYK at 300dpi (placed at actual size) and saved as eps, tiff or jpeg.
Fonts
Both printer and screen fonts should be supplied especially if the artwork has been created on a PC. Fonts used in Illustrator should always be converted to outlines before saving as eps.
Bleed
If your artwork requires ‘bleed’ you must allow at least 3mm.We also recommend that any text is kept at least 5mm away from the edge of the page.
Do I need bleed?
Bleed is the term for “overlapping the edge” and is required when pictures, lines or backgrounds are printed right to the edge of the paper. For example, if you want your business cards entirely covered by a picture, the size of the picture box would need to bleed past the trimmed edge of the paper in all directions. Failing to bleed the background may result in white strips on the sides of your final product.
PDF Files
This is the best method for Pagemaker, Microsoft Word or Publisher files. However it is imperative that you set these up correctly and at the right resolution for print quality. The basic setting in Distiller is ‘press optimised’ but there are other settings to be aware of, plus imported pictures must also be set up carefully as they cannot be ‘fixed’ easily later in production if you get it wrong.
Accepted media
We can accept files saved onto CD, DVD, 100mb Zip, floppy disk, Flash USB or alternatively files may be sent by either email or ISDN.
